Another great TED talk

I think this TED lecture gives some strong ideas for us.
Suburbia was a huge mistake, only possible because of cheap
and ridiculously abundant oil. That era is obviously coming to an end now.
So whats next?

If there is any message that I want you to get from my blog its this:
Learn to grow and find your own food, and learn how to be happy with LESS.

Eating raw vegan food is OBVIOUS. Its an after-thought for me now. Its time to move
on to some critical issues here. If semi-trucks cant ship greens to you
from California during the months of November to June, what do you intend to do?

Our country is facing something that it never has before...
we have placed ourselves on mile-high stilts that are about to break.
We NEED cheap oil to continue as we are...and there are going to be
some serious withdrawals once we are deprived from it.

I hope not to sound like an alarmist.
But hey...even if everything is fine, you would still be growing
your own awesome produce, experiencing MUCH better health
(both mentally and physically)
and saving a ton of money.

But lets be realistic here...all evidence is pointing to trouble.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news...

Life After the Oil Crash

An informed citizen is much more likely to be a PREPARED citizen.

Excellent. I agree with learning to find food, and creating healthier environments.
At 11:52 in this vid, it totally reminded me of Grosse Pointe in MI. Beautiful elm trees lined the streets creating a cathedral effect, which swathed the streets in the most calming green hue. Sigh.
I think the first thing we need to do is bulldoze that 50's post WWII crackerjack housing that is everwhere. And ban all square buildings. I know, I know, call me crazy, but I hate square/rectangle houses etc.
Great Ted talk, thanks.

Yardsnacker...desperate times call for desperate measures. Im with you man.

How about this one? Cover all the cemeteries with gardens...who would be up for that one? Even after people die, they still insist on taking up space. Yeesh...

Take my ashes and plant a tree with them.

And about the Role Model...I think someone has said it before :) Just think of me as a messenger of liberating ideas. Simple enough...

And Kristen...that movie is an eye-opener. Don't get down when you watch it, get INSPIRED!

I don't know that suburbia itself is a mistake, just the way we went about it. It wouldn't be that difficult to convert most suburbs into more sustainable versions (more like small villages), especially since technology now allows lots of people to telecommute.

Thanks for keeping these issues in front of Raw food community!

Perhaps its somewhere here.. do you have a compiled list of the books you used to help you learn more about wild harvesting?

I have to be honest every time I think of the price of oil in the States I am reminded that the current price of oil is cheaper now than it has been in the UK in my memory!

$4 gallons? It's approaching $14 here...

I love a lot of things about your blog and your ideas, but sometimes I have to stop and scratch my head. Could you help us understand how your recent vacation trip to LA with your girlfriend to eat at raw restaurants exemplifies, as you say in this post, "how to be happy with LESS?"

It's tough to be judged by your own standards, but you gotta walk your talk, brother, otherwise your talk will start to sound a lot like hypocrisy.

You're hysterical, "you can still look sharp and eat weeds". I love it. Great video. Great post. Thank you for introducing me to it.

Hey Anonymous...about your comment on my recent vacation to LA...she was going there for MOTHERS DAY and we found super cheap tickets. The raw food restaurants was a bonus.

Im not into possessions, Im more into spending my money on experiences.

Dont jump to conclusions...are you wondering about the supposed frivolousness of flying to LA to eat at restaurants or the carbon footprint? The latter I would agree with you, but you didnt know why we really went out there.

Ask me via email next time if youd like...

I am cracking over here.

What is interesting to me is that all of this seems so obvious when presented in this manner yet all of my life I have grown up in these environments and have never once thought about these issues in this way before.

I will definitely be googling TED talks.
